Bibliographical Information

I graduated in 2002 with a BSc in Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Nottingham. I then went to the University of Sheffield and gained a MSc in Statistics the following year. After a short period away travelling, I returned to Sheffield in 2004 to work on my PhD entitled 'Statistical Testing of Medical Images' supervised by Dr Nick Fieller.

Research

This CASE studentship involves working with both the Medical Imaging Group and the EST Statistical Sciences Department of AstraZeneca at Alderley Park, Macclesfield.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides a non-invasive method of direct investigation of effects of treatments on target tissues. This allows tissue to be examined on several occasions during the course of treatment, thus providing a more accurate assessment of treatment effects and prediction of disease outcome by avoiding inter-individual variability. The overall aim of the work is to develop tools for detecting changes in medical images of target tissues that indicate effects of disease process or of therapies.

Conferences

Here are some links to the talks and posters I have presented at the following conferences:

1. ISMRM 13th Scientific Meeting & Exhibition, Miami, USA, 7-13 May 2005

Poster: "How to analyse dynamic MRI in oncology; advanced histogram analysis gives better statistical power & insight than simple averaging"
Poster: "Principal Component Analysis of the 3He ADC"

2. RSC2005, Cambridge, UK, 4-7 April 2005

Talk: "Classification of the statistical analysis of medical imaging focussing on the analysis of images of the lungs"

3. ISMRM, Manchester, UK, 16-18 October 2004

Poster: "Improvements on histogram analysis for statistical testing of spatially heterogeneous changes within ROI, applied to Ktrans maps from DCE-MRI assessment of acute treatment with ZD6474"; My poster won The Bill Negendank Award – First Place for “Outstanding young investigators in the field of cancer MR”

4. IBC2004/ASC2004, Cairns, Australia, 11-16 July 2004

Talk: "Statistical Testing of Medical Images"

5. RSC2004, Sheffield, UK, 19-22 April 2004

Talk: "Statistical Testing of Medical Images"

Other Interests

I enjoy playing korfball, which I first started at the University of Nottingham. After playing for the Sheffield University first team for two years, I am now coaching the squad. After my first year of coaching, Sheffield University finished fourth in the 2005 BUSA National Championships. Korfball is a mixed sex, Dutch sport and further information can be found at the University website.

I am also learning to salsa dance and play volleyball too.
